states with his older brother, tamerlan a decade ago. the two lived together in cambridge, the suspect who was killed in a shutout this morning, tamerlan is a tsarnaev was 26. in 2007 he became a legal resident in america, he was a student at bunker hill community college and competitive boxer. this violent and drautic series of events was not set off by police, but by the suspects themselves, who were apparently trying to escape law enforcement. here's how it played out. around 10:00 p.m. last night, the suspects robbed a store. they then proceeded to fatally shoot an m.i.t. security officer and hijack a mercedes suv. the owner of that vehicle was held hostage for half an hour while the two brothers pulled $800 out of an atm. they released the owner of the mercedes unharmed. police chased the suspects into watertown, where this shootout took place. the suspects exchanged fire with police and threw explosives towards them. at one point, tamerlan sarn ev got out of the car wearing an ied strapped to his chest and was shot by police. his body was run over by dzhokah tsarnaev as he fled t

by the suspects. in the shootout that ensued in watertown, elder brother, tamerlan tsarnaev got out of the car with explosives strapped to his chest, firing at police officers. at least one was hit and badly wounded. tamerlan was killed, with dzhokhar reportedly ramming the car through police to flee. and that's where we are this afternoon. with a 19-year-old suspected terrorist killer on the loose. and a city at a standstill. nbc news' national investigative correspondent michael isikoff joins us now from boston. mike, just start us off with exactly where this manhunt stands at this very moment, because less than about 20 minutes ago, we understood that there were two suspects that the police were seeking. now we understand that's been reduced to just the one. >> reporter: right. just another example of how much misinformation has been in this case from the beginning. a lot of this is coming from police scanners, where police think as some point they have a suspect or person of interest and it turns out to wash out. just like we often get bum tips in the news business that never quite pan out

fight on the streets of nearby watertown left one suspect dead. suspect number 1, tamerlan and started this massive manhunt for a second suspect. there were pipe bombs and homemade grenades thrown out of the car during that let's go back to catherine herridge. catherine, your impression of what we heard at this press briefing and whether this suspect, dzhokhar may have gotten outside this dragnet. >> i think there were four take aways from the news conference perhaps first and foremost that they believe is he heavily armed. we now know that 200 rounds were exchanged and they also had other explosives in that confrontation with police. given the change in the security posture, it would indicate that they belief he has left the immediate watertown area but they have got a search capacity to go back in if they develop new evidence that he has returned. what they said at the news conference is that his ties are to the watertown area and they do not believe he has any vehicle of his own. they believe he is still in the immediate vicinity. they also indicated that they have had several leads

. the older brother, as you mentioned in the beginning, tamerlan, his picture on the icio gun fight overnight with police in massachusetts. what really has authorities troubled, they have locked down the 20 square block area or so in watertown that we have been discussing and we think they have pinched in on the man in the white baseball cap, but they can't be sure. what has them most concerned is that these two brothers have shown quite a bit of skill, and evidence of training. one senior law enforcement official told us a short time ago, these guys were almost textbook perfect in terms of operational planning and security. they stayed off the radar, but beyond that, they have shown a high level of sophisticatifi sod skill in terms of evading police, and when they were confronted with a police shoot-out, incredibly, one of them escaped that cordon. he made the point that there were more police officer there and the suspects were outgunned. he summed it up by saying when have you ever seen that? they don't known he might have other confederates or other plans. the search, while focused in wat

last night in the interaction with police, tamerlan tsarnaev who was 26 years old. it all started last night in cambridge. there was a shootout with an officer at m.i.t. on the m.i.t. campus. that officer having been killed last night, found dead in his police cruiser. the suspects then reportedly carjacked an suv, and a chase ensued. at one point they did release the driver unharmed. they went into watertown which is just outside of cambridge, about 10, 15 minutes outside of cambridge and that's where there was a shootout with police. by 1:30 a.m., the first suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was dead and the second suspect was on the loose and being chased. this morning at about 5:00 a.m. police shut down the mbta. they have also now seen the shutdown of amtrak between boston and providence, a major shutdown. ed davis, commissioner of police, says this is a major man hunt. >> overall at this hour we've seen a lot of activity. they have surrounded the home in cambridge of the suspects where both lived. the a.p. reportedly got in touch with their father overseas in russia. their father expressi

. the older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, was 26. nbc news learned he spent six months last year outside of the country. authorities are still piecing together where he went and what he did during that time. there are many questions tonight. joining me to help answer them is nbc investigative correspondent michael isikoff and former director of the national counterterrorism center michael leiter. and former fbi profiler clint van zandt. let me start with michael leiter. the other day, it seems like a year ago, two, three days ago you, had this sense, professional instinct, if you will, that this killer, one of the two bombers, was a local. tell me how you came to that assessment. >> well, chris, my take -- >> he is a local. >> he is a local and he's got deep ties to boston. and my take was there's no doubt that the boston marathon is a worldwide known event, but unlike many of the targets, a lot of people really have used in the past, there's something specific to boston about it. there's something specific about the finish line and about patriots day and my take from that was that this
, but the older brother, dead, tamerlan tsarnaev, has been living in america since 2007. tell me your thoughts on what happened here. he's living in america since '07 and at some point, turns and decides he wants to kill americans. what would be your take in terms of the psychology and what these two are thinking or were thinking? >> well, we don't know, but we're about to find out. some say there might be a hybrid here, like major nidal hasan was radicalized via the internet, yet there was another soldier at ft. hood, an enlisted man, who built two explosive devices just like the ones we see used in boston because he had access to the same internet magazines that these guys did, but at ft. hood, he used it to kill soldiers for his own personal reasons, not necessarily anything that had to do with religion or politics. in this particular case, because perhaps the older brother was radicalized, had influence on the younger brother, who's the fugitive right now, we may find this is something like a timothy mcveigh. in essence, the target was not so specific, but the target was located because he
cnn the dead suspect identified as tamerlan sarnias, age 26. the one being sought is sfwlnch zokar sarnias. i'm probably botching the pronunciation of those names. one of the things we know, these procedure brothers are from chechnya. doesn't mean they were radicalized from chechnya at all. it could be they came here, self-radicalized. all that is is the ethnicity. >> phil, what can you tell us about the situation in chechnya, russian/chesh nkn russian/chechen relations. >> the situation in chechnya is reasonably stable. chechnya and the region around it has been the source of an islamist insurgency for something close to 20 years now. two brutal wars in chechnya to put down an islamist separatist movement which it has effectively done. ever since putting an end to separatist ambitions from people who wanted to establish their own chechen state, break away from russia, russia crushed that movement, but there is an ongoing insurgency with chechen fires, dwithin the region, islamist insurgents and terrorists, who have been regularly staging attacks, brutal, effective attacks in mosco
